Ambedkar Jayanti 2024 

Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, thinker, social reformer, and voice for the depressed classes, was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. Ramji Maloji Sakpal was his father, and Bhimabai was his mother.

Baba Saheb was born into a Dalit family, due to which his life was full of struggles. These struggles of his life had shaped his thoughts. Dr. Ambedkar believed in equality. Therefore, he worked throughout his life for the caste system, equality for women, and eradicating the difference between big and small from society. He wanted to do the same even after becoming the Law Minister of India.


Resigned from the post of Law Minister

To give women equal status with men in society, he proposed to pass a bill in which daughters were proposed to have equal rights as sons on their father's property. This bill is called the Hindu Code Bill.

  • Bhimrao Ambedkar was born into a lower caste. His family belonged to the Mahar caste. This caste is considered untouchable in the society. In such a situation, Bhimrao had to face social discrimination since childhood along with weak economic conditions.

  • Bhimrao Ambedkar was admitted to Elphinstone College in 1908. He was the first Dalit student to be admitted to this college.

  • Bhimrao Ambedkar raised his voice against the atrocities on Dalits, lower classes, laborers, and women and started publishing fortnightly and weekly newspapers named ‘Bahishkrit Bharat’, ‘Mook Nayak’, and ‘Janta’.

  • Baba Saheb Ambedkar became the first Law Minister of independent India. Not only this, he prepared the world's longest-written constitution on 26 November 1949. It took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to prepare it.

  • Due to child marriage being prevalent, Ambedkar got married to 9-year-old Ramabai in 1906. At this time Bhimrao was 15 years old. After the death of his first wife Ramabai, he married Savita for the second time.

  • Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar knew 9 languages. He received many standard PhD degrees from many universities in the country and abroad. Baba Saheb had about 32 degrees.

  • In 1951, he resigned from his cabinet post after his Hindu Code Bill draft was blocked in Parliament. In this draft, gender equality was talked about in the law regarding inheritance, marriage, and the economy.

  • In 1956, Baba Saheb left Hinduism and adopted Buddhism. Along with him, his wife Savita and lakhs of Dalits also adopted Buddhism.

  • Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar died on 06 December 1956 at his residence in Delhi. He was suffering from diabetes.

  • After his death, Bhimrao Ambedkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1990.
