Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher and scholar and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award in the year 1954, and in 1963 he was conferred honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Madras Presidency. He served as a professor at prestigious institutions such as the University of Calcutta and the University of Oxford and was also a prolific author and promoted intercultural understanding through his lectures in the US and Europe.

When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, some students requested him to celebrate his birthday on September 5. However, Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested that students dedicate the day to teachers. This is the history of Teachers Day in India and why it is celebrated on September 5.

What is the significance of Teachers Day?

The significance of Teachers Day is that Indian culture gives great importance to the relationship between Guru and Shishya (teacher and student).
